About this project —
To celebrate the sesquicentennial (150) years of the University of Kansas, the Endacott Society has created this web site of Historic Mount Oread. The content is adapted from the book of the same name, compiled and written by Sandra Swanson Wiechert, published in 1999 and again in 2001. Sandra is a member of the KU Endacott Society and participated in this web project. The original photographs were by Wally Emerson. On this web site all photos, except the book cover, are by Jerry Niebaum, and were taken in 2012-2013.
The book content on this site has not been updated since it was published in 2001. No attempt has been made to correct elements that are no longer true. For example Bailey Hall in 2001 was for the School of Education. Since that time the building has been re-purposed and no longer houses Education. On this web site the Facilities Operations Storage Facility has been named the Hall Center, but the oral description pre-dates the building project that resulted in it now being the home of the Hall Center. Of the original storage facility, only the stone arch façade remains.
In the Preface narrative by author, Sandra Wiechert, she mentions the Historic Mount Oread Fund. That has since become the Historic Mount Oread Friends, whose goal is “to ensure that KU’s past is always part of its future.” Their excellent web site also has links to KU landmarks.
Twenty-three members of the Endacott Society have recorded narratives for the project.
